This week, I put up a shelf in my recently remodeled bathroom. While cleaning out my attic, I found a crown molding shelf that I had never hung. I started by repainting the dark wood a metallic palladium silver. Then, I realized that it just wasn’t what I wanted in the bathroom. I ended up finding another spot in my foyer that desperately needed something and played around with paint until I achieved this (photo at left).
I had an idea of what I wanted, something narrow, inexpensive, and a little more modern. Again, couldn’t find it. But as I was walking through Michael’s lsat week, I found exactly what I was looking for (shape, width, size and price). One problem- it was bright Kelly green with white on the outside edge,
I did have fun by showing Connor my perfect shelf for the bathroom. He’s the person in our house that I share my design ideas and look for opinions. He always had an artistic eye and great sense of design. He just looked at me, bewildered, not knowing if he should tell me it really didn’t match.
Again, sometimes seeing the potential in an item is the most important part. I like to figure if I could reuse, upcycle or refinish an item that I like, before getting rid of it.
First. I spray painted the entire thing a muted gold. After it was dried, I decided that one thing I liked about it originally was the contrasting white on the outer edge. I painted the outside edge with metallic white. The I decided to paint the outside of it to match the walls, copper rag-rolled and a light coat of metallic white glaze over the top. To finish it off, I found these pearl three-dimensional stickers in the scrapbooking aisle at Wal Mart ($0.99)
And here is the finished shelf:
