I feel that I have reorganized my linen closet 50 times in the last 15 year. (probably not quite, but it feels that way). I know that a part of the “problem” is the three other people in my home, but I keep trying to keep it organized.
First, of course, the most important step is to evaluate if everything in the closet is REALLY needed. I do keep too many things, I got rid of some (probably could have got rid of more).
This time I took a new approach. I measured the width/depth and height of my shelves and got baskets at Marshall’s that utilized the space as best as possible.
I also decided to change the way I fold my towels and blankets, to fit the depth of the space better. I folded things to allow the most frequently used things (wash cloths/ hand towels up front and put the less used items (extra bath mats, mattress pads) in the rear. I change my pillowcases more frequently, so I kept all the pillow cases separate on a shelf. (as opposed to what other sites say to do – keeping sheet sets together)
I also made a guest area with a set of sheets and an old wet wipe container filled with extra soap/shampoo/lotions.
The second highest shelf has a caddy of cleaning supplies, a first aid kit that can be grabbed quickly, and a box of extra toiletries. I also store old beach towels there. (I use them for wrapping my frames when taking my framed photography to places to display),
Labels were made with card stock and laminated with clear gorilla tape on both sides. I made a first aid box that could be grabbed quickly.
Take home ideas from this project:
- Purge!
- Measure the space and purchase bins or baskets that best utilize all the space
- Rethink the way you fold items. Do what works best for your space.
- Place less used items on top shelfs, sides or rear of the closet
- Utilize mini shelfs to allow for easy stacking of items
- Label, label, label
- Do what works best for your family.
I’m sure I’ll be redoing this again someday, but today… it looks decent.
